The issue you’re describing is not normal and It sounds like you have a potential conflict or corrupt installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin would be the first thing to try, and then disabling other plugins to check for a potential conflict. You can request the refund through your envato account if you are unable to resolve.

I selected Alpha Numeric Characters only – but I want to make sure people only type in English and not other languages but I need to allow spaces, – ! and ?. Is there a way to do this? Is there another option that allows this?
You can customize a list of any disallowed characters you want using the backlist options, and/or customize a list of only the characters you want to allow Using the “specified characters only” option.
Both of these are checked at form validation so it’s a good idea to tell the users to only use English alphabet characters before they begin.
you can also use the text replacement option to replace any accented characters with English alphabet characters on submission.
A new version was just released fixing an issue with specified characters only so be sure to upgrade.

specified characters is available on: single line text, text area, post, post title, post excerpt, post custom field, post tags, and list type fields. what type of field are you trying to add it to?

I was trying on the name field, so that is why. I’m trying on the text area. I added ?, -, , * but it still isn’t allowing these characters. What is the correct way to format this?
and how can I allow english only on other fields that don’t allow specificed characters, backlist isn’t an option b/c it is only on form validation and the message displayed is confusing b/c it says a term isn’t allowed, not only english characters allowed. Is there a way with this plugin?

There is no formatting for the specified chars only input, just type in the characters that you want allowed directly. although it does not “add” additional characters accepted, it limits it to only accepting those characters, as noted, this is on on form validation. if you already limited on input, these will work together, but likely conflicting in what you want to achieve. using only the specified chars only option would be the way to go unless you also want to limit it in another way. just type all the numeric chars and all the letter chars and a space and any special chars you want to allow in and you are set. again, this is on form validation.
fields that do not have the option activated such as name and address are not available by default because they are asking for a specific type of information that may not be accurate if limited to specific characters of the users choosing. however, you can always collect name and address information using single line text inputs and labeling each as an individual piece of that information or having them type it into a single input. for example, making a 2 column single text input section and labeling one as first name and one as last name. you can also un-comment out the lines that remove this availability from those fields in the plugin code if you wish (apx line 1592), but this would require attention with every update.
Per my request at many users wanting an alpha numeric plus spaces etc that works in real time, the devs are currently working on an “english only” option that limits an input to alphanumeric and also allows basic punctuation chars and spaces. this would roll out for names and addresses as well, but again, if sending something to, or recording a name or address it is generally not recommended to limit it to the english language when it would be inaccurate. This update is not a guarantee and it is still suggested to collect names and addresses as they actually are, but using the specified chars only by itself allows you to customize only the chars you want allowed at form validation
- Added “Alpha Numeric +” option to allow to basic alpha numeric english characters with basic punctuation.

- Tested on WP 6.7.3
Although the text is still formatted on submission , I have also passed along to the devs the issue of non-realtime case formatting along with other real time changes to see if that an be resolved in the next update. This is more for peace of mind for the website devs as they test than it is for the end users to see their information entered changed in realtime, but it would not hurt

It looks good but when I submit the form the gravity form entry has the name and text box field blank!! the data is not saved at all. there is no error shown and the notifications work, but the data is not there. I selected 2 options: 1. first letter upper case and 2. alpha numeric +. please can you have the devs check this.

thank you for your help in getting this working. The fields are showing now on submit. But First letter upper case makes the first letter capital. What if I want to write a message or two names in the field? I can’t start another sentance with a capital letter, it is all lower case after the first letter. Is there a way to write a paragraph of text and capitalize the first letter in each sentance?
also for the Alpha Numeric+ can you allow more special characters like @&*-/(). In fact all the special characters would be great, I just want it to be English and if someone wants to write & or a word with a – they shouldn’t get frustrated that it doesn’t work.

Alpha Numeric + can be expanded to include any other special chars, but with it’s first release there is a need to gather more community feedback before shaping it one direction or another.
The devs decided to roll out realtime specified chars only which is likely the most powerful option for you to create any custom alphabet or character set you want available to use on an input. Using this now restricts in realtime as well as on form validation.
Alpha Numeric + on the other hand remains a simple one click way to limit to basic typing needs for the English Alphabet.
New in version 2.8.7- Added “Specified Characters Only” fields realtime input restriction.
- Fixed issue with “Specified Characters Only” fields not pre-populating the set value in the form editor.
If I select First letter upper case then it works in real time and changes as I type. If I also select Alpha numerica characters then it only lets me use the Alpha characters but ALSO allows uppercase letters, it does not correct in real time. Will it only correct in after the form submission (it is a long form so I haven’t test that)? Is that the correct way for it to work? The real time changes do not work for First letter upper case if Alpha numerica is selected too? Can I email you privately with a link to the form so you can see what I mean?

You can send a link for testing. But yes, please test the formatted results after submission. Some formatting is on submission only and some is in real time.
It seems to work on form validation, it is just confusing b/c without the Alpha characters selected it works in real time.

Thank you! I tried it on one of our forms and the Lower Case and First Letter Upper Case option works great but the option First Letters Upper Case doesn’t work. Can you advise how I can get that one to work as the form with Names, Company etc will have multiple words that require each first letter to be upper case.

First step is to be sure the option is correctly saved on the field in the form editor.
Then if your page has any JS errors preventing the real time case changing to work have you tried submitting the form and checking the results? If persons are pasting in data or auto filling etc. the case is also revised on submission via PHP on the server side.
The option is selected correctly however it doesn’t work. Real time case changing only seems to work on lower case or first case upper options only. We need to have all 3 options on our forms depending on specific fields so can you please advise how we can get the upper case option for multiple words to work?

Please try clearing both your browser cache and files and your website caching plugin pages and reload the form page.
Clearing cache doesn’t resolve the issue. The option of cap for each word does not work.

I did a test application all the way to submission this morning and when it saves in Gravity Forms the upper case each word option works correctly. It just doesn’t work when the form is populating. I appreciate this plug in as we have people that like to type in all case and if it saves correct that’s what matters!

Yes, as noted, the input is also corrected on submission even if the real time changes are not happening due to potential site conflict or browser error with JavaScript.
Normal functionality for the First Letters Uppercase is the it also functions in real time. You can check normal operation on our plug-in demo page here:

Hi there, been using your plugin and it’s been great! I’ve found a little bug, which I was hoping you could help with. When I select “Disabled Field” for a Text Area Field, it disables the field, however if the text is long and goes beyond the height of the text box area, the user is unable to scroll down further to read the entire contents of the text area field.
Do you know how I can disable the field i.e. prevent the user from copying and pasting the content and make the field appear grayed-out (as standard), whilst also still allowing them scroll?

This is not a bug but how disabled fields function. You can not interact with disabled fields. To have a text area big enough for being able to read all the information you have in it that you have set to disabled, you can set the default width and height of a text area field by setting its “height value in CSS”. This would preload the text area at the specified dimensions or percentages for adequate space to view your content.
To make this easier for anyone who isn’t familiar with writing CSS for a site, and as an added feature to lock down the given height of a text area, we have just added a feature to simply type the desired row number for a text area which sets the height at that number of text rows/lines explicitly and allows you to simply set the height this way for any locked down fields from right in the form editor. You still cannot scroll this as is would be disabled, but you can the row hight to match the number of needed rows to exactly match ..or be larger than your prefilled content. You can also experiment with the new (BETA) auto resizing text boxes for setting this same setting to 0 to have it auto size to the prefilled content. (also autosize on input)

It sounds like your formatting of text replacement values is incorrect. You are getting a php warning that the replacement value does not exist when it is trying to process it. Please review the instructions for the option again and if you are trying to replace a value with a space or nothing, refer to those specific notes in the instruction details.
Additionally, we just updated the plugin to suppress the warnings from any incorrect entries in the replacement text values. Ver. 2.8.3 is now released for download or auto update through the Envato market plugin. This should stop the warnings (which differ from actual errors if you are reviewing your logs), but your functionality will still not function until the option entries for text replacement are properly formatted.
After further reviewing the option instructions, if you need further assistance with how to enter a replacement value please follow up with what specific case you are trying to enter.

if its standard text replacement the special chars are not allowed. There is also a comma missing/ misplaced here: -v,::>-V-w::>-W,
this should be :
-v::>-V,-w::>-W,That could be the cause of the issue with 2 non comma separated replacement designators in a single entry. This would also cause the single “-v” to have no replacement value and throw the warning in the logs when processed.
However, I do wonder if you could simply turn on the “UPPER CASE” option for the fields where this input is desired? Or if this replacement is from a longer string of entry value then that may not be the desired result if other lower case chars are accepted.
Oh no, what I need is an upper case for composed names like “jean-jacques” -> “Jean-Jacques”. Thanks for the fix, I’ll update my rule accordingly.

The rule fix should fix it, but the “First Letters Upper Case” option will likely also actually also do that for you much more simply as special chars are considered a word break. So just selecting that option would capitalize the first letter of every part of a name such as :
Jean-Jauques Guillorford / Maynard John Tiller
but again that would likely apply only if the name is the single entry in the field
If you haven’t fixed this bug recently, then no, the “First Letters Upper Case” is not working like that.
The ”-” is considered has a letter (that’s a bug) and then “jean-jacques” is transformed into “Jean-jacques”.
You can try it yourself.
If you fixed this bug, please le me know, and I’ll remove this rule ^^

I am not sure which version you are running but Ver. 2.8.3 is available and previous versions would function as described above which would properly format to “Jean-Jacques”.
This is using the “First Letters Upper Case” option, and not the “First letter upper case” option.
I should specify that *most special characters are considered word breaks. An underscore or apostrophe would however not function as one, but the hyphen/dash as in the example along with most other special chars do.
Well, you are right, it was not working a few years ago but now it does! That’s really a simplier approach, I’ll remove my cutstom formatting everywhere now and use this instead. Thanks!

Yes, both many earlier versions from years back and the latest version supports LIST fields both Multiple columns or single. this is currently tested and functional on the following:
PHP ver 8.1.27
WP ver 6.6
GF ver 2.8.14
GFAuto Formatter ver 2.8(.1)
Are you running other plugin(s) or custom code which could be affecting your list fields data? List field data in GF should be stored as a serialized array which is string data. If it is being changed to anything aside from string data and triggering this error because our plugin uses a function which is actually expecting a string, we assume that we can find the issue by checking for what is causing the data type to be changed. Also, this applies to standard list field only. repeater or nested type fields are NOT fully supported as they are still in development with GF.
No but we found a specific behavior: it seems that the validation process is different if we combine the submission including a list field with a Stripe field enabling the “extended payment methods”. Crazy, it works well if the field hasn’t that option enabled.

No, actually only related to the list field. The entry isn’t validating due to GFAF issue.
We have not been able to replicate this error testing multiple list fields with random values or blank along with a stripe field and additional payment options active.
Are you running the latest stripe add-on 5.7.0 and using the latest stripe API with the new Stripe Field (Elements, SCA-ready) used or checkout page?

We forced uppercase on these list fields for your information. As list field content is an array and not directly a string value, it seems crashing. Maybe try with conditional logic too?
List field data is an associative array but it is stored in json format as standard string data.
Maybe that validation process change the data value from JSON to array before processing? Any way to test it before formatting the data?

I am not sure what you mean about formatting the form.
From the settings page at top:
INSTRUCTIONS: Set Individual field options within fields “advanced” options tab while in the Gravity Forms Form Editor. Set Form wide options on each forms “Forms Settings” page. Centralized blacklist and text replacement is configured below, as well as custom messages for failed blacklist validation. Field specific blacklists and text replacements are in the fields “advanced” options tab.”
Open the form editor and go to a fields advanced tab. There is a GF AUTO FORMATTER section. All options to format each field ( not centralized options ) are set there for each field individually
In the form editor “form settings” page you can set form wide options. Such as turning on the submission review page.

We are not familiar with Gappiintments, but if it operates as a feed or add-on basis you should try using the “encrypt after submission is processed” option with the fields (advanced tab for field in form editor) to pass unencrypted data to your feeds or add-ons since they do not know what to do with encrypted information. The data is then encrypted after being handed off to those plugins.

Nested forms are not supported for encryption at this time . Some base functionality will work but we do not support full functionality through it.
For the Gappointments being used through nested forms this would apply as well.
Hello. Your plugin is amazing thanks but It seems that there’s an issue regarding accentued country in the address field when we force them uppercase.
For example “LA RÉUNION” in french is uppercase on select but if we edit the entry in the admin end, the dropdown is empty as it can’t match the country in the dropdown. If I update the country to “La Réunion” in the database everything is okay then as it can match the value in the dropdown.
Any idea?

With all of the possible ways to change the data during or on entry, it is important to test the results to be sure they are valid for the field type on or after submission. Most things are ok based on field types, but it is possible to run into things such as this.
In this scenario, is the desired functionality that it would be possible to skip the country since it can have this effect in the address field? Or to just change the possible country values to uppercase for the form if uppercase is selected?
Hello. The desired functionality is to have the full address uppercase, including the country, with the possibility to edit the entry from the admin end.
In this case, it’s just an issue regarding the accented countries like “THAÏLANDE”, “LA RÉUNION”, “NOUVELLE-CALÉDONIE”, etc.
Ok I will pass this to the dev team to research. Currently it is understood as being an issue with the specific character sets being able to be changed for submission, but then not loaded by GF core for comparison in the dropdown if looking to edit afterwards. The gravity forms filter for the countries drop down unfortunately has no available parameters to pass which would target a single form on its own but something may be doable to focus on any form with address field specified as case changed.
OK fine. Actually it’s only about uppercase or not, as the comparaison is okay if not asking your plugin to force this field uppercase.

There s a solution by the develop team in testing. would you like you please assist in beta test this solution? It can change the GF list of countries on PHP end so match front end display and will show properly on edit of the entry. It can only utilize one case format because available filter only apply to the form as a whole and is not field specific, so will use last address field format on the form. Please click us user name and send an email address where we can send the beta version to and we will send you beta version 2.8 for testing to be more speed and be sure you have no more issue with the plugin capitalization of address when editing the entry and using country with rare accented mark of letter. additionally the update include improved sorting of accented character countries when in dropdown list if server has available functionality.

Yes. This currently appears to be the only way to be able to adjust the listed countries to match a potential augmented data value. Unfortunately it is global to the form as it is loaded and not per field, but it does allow for the change as requested.

2.7.3 is confirmed working on those system specs. It’s actually its main development environment.
You may want to try deactivating ALL other plugins aside from gravity forms and then activating our plugin. then activate others 1 by 1 to see if there is a possible plugin conflict.
It would help to include the full text of the error so you can also turn on error reporting in WP and check what the cause is while doing this.
Let us know if there is a specific plugin conflict and what the error is.

There is a few settings for alpha only, numeric only, alpha-numeric only. which disallow anything but (insert name of option). Those options would be much easier to use to limit an input to alpha numeric only entry with no special characters. there are also this plugin options to strip html from input.. etc. Independent of this plugin you can also use an input mask on password form field types to limit the types of characters and the specific sequencing of them within the input. see gravity forms documentation for input masking. it is under the fields general options. Using any of these is possible in combination with each other and should fit your use case needs for website.
I cannot see specifically what you are referring to as making it through field validation, but you can send us an email through contact form( click our user name) and type in exact scenario for us to review

also just a note , but since you have a comma in that list you need to be sure that the comma is entered as specified in the strict list. “*To use a comma in your blacklist text use: see setting instructions.. cannot insert here”
if you send email with specifc entry into the strict list and specific text being allowed through we can look to resolve for you, but the above mentioned solutions are recommended to limit password to alphanumeric input only.

You can deactivate your test site by clicking on the button that reads “licensing and deactivation” Deactivate the test site. Then activate your live site.
BE SURE to switch the website key to the new auto key on the live site. (Delete the website key and save then save again to generate the auto key.) it is different to each WP install so you do not want to be using the auto key from your test site as a custom (non auto) key in your live site.

Is there a way to set up the formatting so that the first letter in any word is capitalized, but any word can also be customized? For example:
If I type the following company name – - “Brown LLC”, it will show up on the back end as “Brown Llc”. Is there a way to be able to set it up where “Llc” is changed to “LLC” before if is posted in the database? In other words, is the first letter is always capitalized option cannot be modified? I have the following in Central Strict Text Replacement – Llc::>LLC I am testing this on a single field typing in a company name. I have also selected First Letters Upper Case and th Central Text Replacement box. I have typed the following company in a couple of times to test – Brown LLC. First, I typed BROWN LLC and it came back as Brown Llc. I then typed in Brown Llc and it came back as Brown Llc and then I typed Brown LLC and it cam back as Brown Llc. All of these were completed in the preview window and submitted. I then checked to view the results by clicking on Entries in the back end.

I see. This is an issue of processing order. The CASE FORMATTING is processed AFTER the text replacement.
This allows for people replacing certain text to have it properly case formatted in the end after it is replaced
if you remove your case formatting and keep your replacements in place you can verify they are replaced on submission.
However, this does not allow for both case formatting AND replacing text after it is case formatted as you are looking to do. So, we upgraded it to be even more versatile! Hopefully this works for you and others.
Text replacement now runs before and after all other text formatting, so you can base your replacements off of what the text will be before and/or after other formatting options are run! Always test to verify your expected results!
In your use case you need to use replacements such as
Llc::>LLC or Llc::>L.L.C.
your data will be as you noted by changing only first letters to caps after first round of text replacement. then when replacement runs again you can catch the Llc and change it.
for that matter you could change L.L.C and l.l.c. to Llc or llc. the case formatting will return both as Llc after they are replaced. then your additional replacements listed above would catch the Llc and finalize it as LLC or whatever you want after the other case formatting etc are run as long as you know the result that comes from them to change with a replacement.
