The plugin shares the link in the field as it is. If you add the proper link to the _product_url field and set the custom URL the {cf__product_url}, the plugin will share the correct product link.
If you do it correctly and it still does not work, the support team must investigate it after you contact us.

Are you sure the documentation for creating a custom app is up to date. It doesn’t match when I go to the developers page?
Went through the whole laborious process of adding a personal Twitter app. Turns out I had previously set up an app, so I changed the name and regenerated all the keys etc. Still doesn’t work!
Yes, it is up to date. You will need to delete the App and create a new App in the current Project to have the latest version of the Twitter App
One more question. Do I need to create a separate app for each Twitter account? (I have two)
No, it will work for all your accounts. But be aware that an App will have 50 requests a day, so you can share 25 posts a day with 2 accounts.
