The front end hotel Read More button is not working – it just goes to the alias without the rest of the URL. e.g. go to the hotel included on install, click read more, browser says “can’t open page royal-hotel as can’t find the server royal-hotel. In the source for the page I see ....

It works on the demo. Don’t forget to define an alias (string of characters without spaces or accents displayed in the URL of the page) for your pages or articles for each language. You can specify the alias in Admin > Modules > Pages (or Articles) > Edit/New > Alias. E.g. http://www.mywebsite.tld/mypage (mypage is the alias of the page)
Make sure the file htaccess.txt has been renamed into .htaccess and the variable {DOCBASE} in this file (line 67) has been replaced with the document root.
RewriteRule ^ - [E=BASE:{DOCBASE}] [L]
Must be replaced with:
RewriteRule ^ - [E=BASE:/] [L]
If your website is installed in a subfolder (for example /test), the correct syntax will be:
RewriteRule ^ - [E=BASE:/test/] [L]

This is a fresh install and checking the demo data i.e. the Royal Hotel. All other links work ok. It is just the Read More button on the hotel that does not work. It is not missing the alias – it is missing the first part of the url. Check out https://bookdirectfrance.eu to see what I mean. Do any search, click on any (of the only two) hotel’s Read More button.

Make sure that in the admin panel > modules > pages, the page “Hotels” have an alias defined for all languages. Make also sure that in the database, table pm_page, the column “system” is set to 1 for this page. Finally, make sure that still in the admin panel > modules > hotels, all hotels have an alias defined.

I’ve been trying to install this, i did this this with the help of installation guide but it wasn’t enough to solve all the issues and confusion.
I somehow made it to the setup and there was a message ‘Congratulations! You have successfully finished the quick installation of your website. Click on to begin.’ But when I click on login it shows ‘Unable to connect to the database. Please contact the webmaster or retry later.’

Admin just make a single commission from per hotel reservation. All reservation amount goes to admin account. Amount will be paid to the hotel owner when hotel owner request for withdrawal. Hotel owner can set up their bank information where requesting amount will be paid. I think my thinking is also similar to booking.com. Sorry for the delay in my answer. Tere is no easy way to create custom layouts. You need tyo replicate existing layouts (/templates/default/models/) and code by your own with HTML and PHP.

Did you check in your PHP error logs? No more errors or details? Make sure your PHP version and Apache are installed with most common modules (PDO, MySQL, MBString, URL rewrite…)

In each room you can add an external calendar. You can also export your own calendar and add it in other OTA websites.
You can change the user roles in each module config file (/admin/modules/module_name/config.xml > node roles)
There is no way to add custom fields, you need to add your own code manually.
To hide the hotel owner registration, you need to edit the file /templates/default/common/header.php and hide/comment/delete the option (I am a hotel owner, I am a traveler), keep only “I’m a traveler” and make it hidden.

When you add a room in the admin panel, you define a default price, but this price is not used to check availabilities. You need to add rates (prices) for each room in the admin panel: Admin > Modules > Rates
Make sure you’ve defined a “Number of people” and a “Price / night” (if the price is per room) OR a “Price / extra adult or child / night” (if the price is per person) when you add you rates.
