The main difference between the 2 plugins is that Wpcomomatic works for wordpress.com sites, while Wordpressomatic works for self hosted wordpress sites.

Please try using the %%item_description%% shortcode if you are importing content to your blog.
If you are posting to WordPress.com, please use the %%post_excerpt%% shortcode.

I updated the plugin to v1.0.3.3 – it will extract the excerpt from the text.
Please use this shortcode: %%post_excerpt%%
The %%item_description%% shortcode should be used in other configuration parts of the plugin, I misunderstood the issue initially.

The plugin can publish new posts to WordPress.com – it cannot update existing posts from there.
To post only first paragraph, please go to ‘Posts to WordPressCom’ plugin menu -> edit the ‘WordPressCom Post Content Template:’ settings field -> leave in it this:
%%post_excerpt%%
-> save settings.
