I almost prefer the Tut. If I was going to use an image why not just create one in Photoshop?
From what I understand (I’m not the author, not affiliated to the author, nor using the class) you define both the overlay and image.
You wont have any use of this class if it’s just to render a single image, a better usage example would be if you’d want to apply a custom overlay (style) on user uploaded content.

Thing is that the tut you’re linking to is based on plain CSS & JS, while “Realistic-Map” is creating and caching an image of your choice with the “3d effect” layer on top of it.
