is it possible to create a vertically split intro, with an icon/image in between the two images with this plugin? Kinda like a curtain closing from opposite sides and then an icon fading in between the two images after it appears. Does this make sense? Do you have a backend demo we can play with, so I can see if this possible?

1) yes with normal setting look here http://plugins.ad-theme.com/wpmegaintro/customhtml/ but you need to make an url different from home page.
2) yes you can create your intro page using visual composer.
3) yes you can put this url without any problem.

you can create an intro page without any problem using our plugin.
You can’t only redirect automatically after 5 seconds. To make it need a little php code. And if you want I can help you to make it.
You can show the intro page for new session. So if user access at your site first time intro page will be show.
