This is great. Personally I would like it if this script also searched for the movie screenplay (there’s lots of sites on the Internet that make screenplays available) and presented that as a link as part of the returned dataset.

This way you would be adding value to the IMDB data as even they don’t do this…

Hi cfoinfo,

Thanks for the feedback and your idea is great too. But for now, the script uses only IMDb URLs and because of this, the returned data only come from IMDb. In order to make such an improvement, the script should search the movies with their titles or it should use the title in the dataset of IMDb. So, if we have the movie title then we can search for screenplays on the sites that contains screenplay data. But now, the search results could not return the right screenplay that we are looking for because of the movies with same title or search results that include related movie titles.

Again, this idea is great, but as you see it’s difficult to implement on this script and there is no guarantee for getting the right screenplay.

By the way, we have tried this before ;) If you have any more suggestions, please let us know.

Best regards :)

Clicked “Get Data” on the demo and got this error: This URL is invalid. Please try again.

In order to get data, firstly, paste the URL of the IMDb movie page into the text field and then click the “Get data” button. That should work fine :)

Just wondering how this sits with IMDBs terms of use, specifically the following:

“Robots and Screen Scraping: You may not use data mining, robots, screen scraping, or similar data gathering and extraction tools on this site, except with our express written consent as noted below. “

Each user of your script would need to have that written consent and relevant licence to allow gathering of data (whether it’s stored or not).

For commercial use of data, the licence starts at $15,000. For non-commercial use, data may only be taken from the FTP plain text data supplied by IMDB and scraping the website is expressly forbidden (See here for more info: http://www.imdb.com/licensing/noncommercial and click the For More Information link in 2nd paragraph)

Am I way off with this?

Hi divabanana,

Thanks for your notice and you are right, IMDb prohibits creating any kind of online/offline database of movie information (except for individual personal use) with their data ( http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?usedatasoftware ).

In order to create a movie database, you should gather data from IMDb. However, you cannot gather data without storing them and our script does not store or collect any data from IMDb. At this point, all risk of integrating this script with a database is assumed by the customer and because of this issue, we have stated necessary notifications in our documentation, demo page and description of the item.

Now, you may ask what’s the point of buying this script? Customers can use it for learning purposes and they are still free to modify it to write a scraper for another site which allows gathering of its data.

Any more feedback about this issue would be appreciated, because we do not want to infringe or violate any copyrights.

Best regards.

Here is known bugs:

Take a look this link imdb.com/title/tt0165985/

It is year 1999, Video Game (VG).

Your scraper as Year takes VG, and title “(1999) Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun (VG)” (add year at beginning).

Hint: After year in title are another () with V, VG, I, II and so on.

It means: Video, Video Game, II (two movies with same title in same year).

Hi sojic,

You are right and we know this issue. The problem is caused by movie titles like (500) Days of Summer (imdb.com/title/tt1022603/). The script works properly for this kind of titles, but as you pointed out, the script can not handle the process for titles including (VG), (V) etc. So as you see, this is a bottleneck and we are trying to find a solution that works for both cases. Until that time, we can say that the script was designed for movies and tv series. :)

If you have any more questions or problems you can contact us anytime and thanks for your purchase :)
