Just saw this posted about on The Next Web: WP App Store. Looks like it’s a plugin you install, which enables you to purchase and automatically install premium plugins from different vendors.
So my question… Is Envato planning/hoping to get CodeCanyon into this mix, so people can potentially purchase CC plugins directly from their WP dashboard?

I highly doubt that will ever happen.
WPAppStore takes a 30% commission (I think), which would mean that authors would first lose a part of profits to Envato (as usual), and then also to the WP App Store people. No bueno.
The only way it would work is if Envato didn’t take any cut, which will for obvious reasons never happen.
What would make more sense would be that Envato develop a similar plugin where people could purchase themes & plugins coming exclusively from this marketplace

Ooh, I like that idea. Could be a nice way to enable automated plugin&theme updates via the Wordpress dashboard as well.

Envato could do this – (actually any author could probably create a plugin that does a similar thing with envato items) – the problem will be themes and plugins are not all stored the same way in the zip file. Some are zip’s within zip’s, some are folders within zip files. So it would be difficult to figure out which files to automatically install after a purchase is made.
An easy fix for the commission system would be for wpappstore to charge 30% more (or whatever) for each theme or plugin. This way they get their cut, and they can pay the normal marketplace rate for each theme or plugin. The end user just pays 30% more.
Bit of a trick with licencing, but should be ok. eg: Buying an item via a 3rd party service. Envato still gets the sale in the end.
I had a play around with it and did a review you can read it here http://wpin.me/wp-appstore-review/
