In PS CS4 , is there a way to un-smart-objectify something once you’ve converted it to a smart object, other than CMD +Z?

hmm right click on layer and choose Rasterize Layer. Hope it helps :)

Double Click on the Smart Object. Then the layers appear. Hold “ALT” and drag the f(x) to a other file that you have opened at the same time. That should work.
