I’m not putting any effort in this system of referrals and this is the result. Had only 5 new members but no one deposited.

However, I have a little plan to increase the overall income from this referrals system.

I take referrals / marketing very seriously.Have tried a bunch of different things with different results and actually share the same 0.8% percentage on clickthrough – registered.

If you are just starting with referring make sure you have your links in these places :

Adobe Exchange – Number one source for referrals to all my files according to the envato analytics.

YouTube & Vimeo – Adding your video previews here generates some clicks and also have landed me several freelance jobs.

Without spending a dime you can get 1000+ clicks per month.

I have also ran some banner ads on different sites and the best results came from places which are completely focused on After Effects – No surprise there.General design / freelance blogs might give you more impressions for your money and good amount of clickthroughs,but the interest in depositing and actually buying a file seems to be low.

Here is a month i advertised on AETUTS +

July 2010 4579 Clickthroughs 65 Registered Members 24 Deposits

And here is when i had two banners on general design / freelance blogs (illustration,photgraphy,photoshop,animation etc.)

January 2011 19332 Clickthroughs 29 Registered Members 20 Deposits

The difference in clickthrough – registered ratio is pretty huge.So IF you are ready to spend some money on advertising,make sure you pick a place where After Effects fans hang out.

As far as how much to spend on a banner,i have now drawn the line at 125$

After, obvious poor referral strategy, I surf around internet to find out useful tips and here is first results:

with certain amount of money as cut From First Deposit.

(My opinion is that showing money in public is not best way so this is private data, sorry)

Strategy for twitter.

1. Watch out who following you and who you follow.

Social Networks

2. Suggest Envato marketplaces, and favorite items from marketplaces, via different social networks to others

Website

3. Put some envato marketplaces banners to your website or even popular, top seller, seasonal, items…

In your city – friends, colleagues people who may know form city, town,...

4. Talk to friends, other people, potential customers and recommend envato marketplaces

Be part of community. Its hard work, but at the and sometimes must bring some results.

Unique made a point advising to advertise somewhere where AE fans lurk. Don’t waste Time (or money) in the general public. The register/deposit rate is much better when the efforts are focused. Mocarg does an amazing work in Youtube luring every AE fan to his profile and then redirecting them here to spend their money. He won’t tell you how he does it though, it’s his darkest secret.
