Is it a good design?

It’s hard to read and the background cuts off on my screen. I’m not a fan of the transparency either. The only thing I like is the animation when the page first loads.

Just my 2 cents.

with a 1280×800 background image that leaves 2/3 of the page in black (I’ve 1920×1200) is difficult to see any design

No, it’s not. It’s a very, very bad design. But that doesn’t matter, because your product is not the “design” but the Video Player. Go and customize a ThemeForest template. Shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. Focus on building your product, and not making a design for it.
