First, I have to say that I am excited about being a part of VideoHive and, of course, making money…
I had submitted my first titles template 6 days ago and today it was rejected, said it was too derivative.
I need help understanding why, because when I compared my work with some of the works already in the marketplace I new it was different enough, and while it was modeled after a recent movie end-titles, I still feel it was high enough quality to be presented in the marketplace.
Here is my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSKtg72jxA0, and if you just search for “TRON” on VideoHive, then you get the templates I was comparing it too.
Am I wrong?

Sorry, the comma got in the way:

- Bought between 1 and 9 items
- Exclusive Author
- Has been a member for 2-3 years
- Referred between 50 and 99 users
- Sold between 5 000 and 10 000 dollars
Remove the comma at the end of the URL and it’ll work =)
TUnified: Very cool project!!! and “Derivative” shouldn’t be a reason to reject it when there are already many featured film title/credit sequences available for sale here. Doesn’t seem fair to me
EDIT : are you sure it wasn’t just a soft rejection?

This is what was in the email:
This File Did Not Meet Our Criteria I’m sorry we don’t accept derivative works any more.
They also pointed me to a forum post about derivative works and they pretty much said that they are not accepting any more derivative works.
I get pretty much all my motivation and inspiration from cinema.
Font, music, text – all 100% Tron… No wonder it got labeled too derivative. It’s not too hard to make it look a lot less like the movie in question tho. It’s a very cool project btw.
Fix it, re-upload and it’ll pass. There is a limit to what can you do here – you just need to feel it

Ok, I think I understand. I difinitely did not include that music in the preview file
But, yes, I did mention Tron End Credits and the font was in the preview, so maybe I need to modify it a bit to not mention Tron so much…
Thanks!

Think differently. Instead of “being inspired by” Tron and thinking up ways to get a knock-off of Tron past the censors, why not be inspired by the originality and differentness of Tron and try to create something as original and different? I guess you’ll have less problems with rejections if you approach it like that.
On a purely moral basis, Videohive is on dodgy ground if they have authors who are basically making money from somebody else’s design and creativity. It’s dubious legal ground too. There’s definitely a grey area here and some more or less derivative files have slipped through in the past, but I think that going forwards they’re going to be less tolerated.
TUnified saidI for one loved your project, and am very interested in purchasing it. It is really nice quality, and I can’t wait to see what you put out.
