I’m looking to develop an online database / social network site. Would like to know if there is a WordPress Theme or HTML Template you may recommend that would work to start this up.
What role does server space play in setting this up?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you GG
Based in my experience, social networking sites are heavy on the database, becuause instead of content coming from a handful of authors, you’ll have it coming from thousands. You’ll have lots of database writes as a result and from commenting, tracking likes, friends, etc. If you have user photo or video galleries, keep an eye on max file sizes and number of files allowed. I used to work for Internet Brands, who owns ModelMayhem, a social network for models, photographers, makeup artists, etc. That site alone was run on 25 servers and had so much CDN traffic it broke LimeLight and we had to switch to Akamai.
Agh Internet brands ,they bought vb didn’t they ..and an old haunt of mine , british expats.

Yeah, a pity really…they really ruined VB…the founders moved on to Xenforo, so at least the spirit lives on. IB bought a few sites I used to frequent…namely FlyerTalk and FitDay…at least they haven’t changed too much, apart from more ads.
Thanks fillerspace. Excellent insight! Greatly appreciiated. What about recommended WordPress Themes and/or HTML Templates to start it up?
