Gotta say it again, Ken…. false economy.
When I bought CS5 , I worked out how long it would take to pay for itself in productivity savings as follows:
I worked out the relative speed compared to CS4 , then made a conservative estimate of the time I would save per day waiting for the screen to update and waiting for RAM previews (I didn’t include rendering time saved), then multiplied this by my hourly rate.
How long did it take to pay for itself?
3 days!

Hello
I just uploaded 2 Templates in CS5 , and one allready had a few sales. Unfortunately as others allready said, some customers did not even check before downloading, which CS version it is. So i got a few mails from customers asking why they are not able to open the project, and i had to explain that it is a CS5 template. Think by this i’ll have some “unhappy” customers, and as far is have found out, Adobe will not release a CS5 version, with the possibility to save the project as a CS4 ( while rendering the stuff which was not available at CS4 ).
This is not realy customer friendly, as i work with a few of other applications which are not realy backwards compatible, but they allow you to save the file in the older version by disabling the new features.
I will also work again in CS4 and wait before i upload more CS5 projects.
good point felt, I guess I just don’t know what the specific speed difference would be… I’m running a 2.4Ghz 4gb ram dualcore win7 machine, don’t know if I’d see much of a speed improvement? my mobo (asus p5wdg2 workstation) won’t use more than 4gb ram i think, so I’d have to u/g my hardware too, which i will eventually…
i always build my own pcs, have for 20 years.. this looks like a good (pricey though) cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115224 ... and this for the mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131614 (that mobo will take up to 24Gb ram! wow what a difference)
they’ve got a lot to choose from re cpus, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%2050001157%20600030236&IsNodeId=1&name=Quad-Core
and I like asus mobos: http://www.newegg.com/Store/BrandSubCategory.aspx?Brand=1315&SubCategory=280&name=ASUS-Intel-Motherboards&Pagesize=100&Order=RATING
will likely u/g to that stuff first, a new mobo/8-24gb RAM , then the cs5

@ken….
If you’re only using 4gb RAM and dual-core, then you won’t see all the benefits, true. You’d see only 1gb of extra RAM , for instance. But 64bit seems to speed everything up across the board, so you never know. Might be worth downloading the demo to see how it feels.
As we’ve talked about before, upgrading to CS5 is a bit of a big deal because all plug-ins need to be upgraded too.
For me though, I work under time pressure a lot – so I’m always pretty hot on anything that can improve workflow and make the program more invisible… clearing the way for creative thought.
But also, at a pragmatic level, time is money and when I did the sums, upgrading was a no-brainer.

I am still working on cs3.. after the work is done I render the flv in cs5. Love the 64 bit advantage but I guess I will stick with 32bits a lil bit longer. It is the psychological factor that bugs most of the authors.. not the necessity itself. Many of the template here can easily be edited/finished in cs3/4.. they are not THAT heavy to work with.

good points… when it comes to render speed, which I do need to increase my speed of, I’m going to upgrade. Ok since the last post I’ve spent a lot of time at newegg, I’m going to get these very soon (took me a lot of time to research this, today):
Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4×256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950 :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3 .0 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131614
and 6gb corsair dominator memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145224
+ arctic ice for the cpu install, maybe a new heat fan or two, in my lian li case, and a new 850w PS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139011&Tpk=Corsair%20HX%20850w
that’ll make cs4 go really fast… and then later I’ll upgrade to cs5, for further improvements. good point too re all the plugins need to be re-bought, for now I’ll just upgrade my pc to a much faster one, that’ll make a big difference (it’s “just fine” now, but speed = money).

I agree with Inlife, Ben, and Ken…From an author POV i can’t see the benefit of doing cs5 now.The real big change is the 64 bits,power, and some other nice but not so used tools/effects.If you as a buyer want to speed your render times, go head, all project here are CS5 capable.
If you are happy with your system, and at the moment really no need to improve your workflow, you can still buying CS3 .CS4…
Things are changing, and one day 32 bits systems will be obsolete in this world,but for now the big majority of buyers are running 32 bit app (I guess for compatibility too…) By producing CS5 now,you will just close the doors at a large number of buyers out there, just because you want to render your project faster.
I run a SL OSX 64 bits ,8 core, 16 GB DDR3 ram, so I like the fast render too, but I want my files usable to the larger number of customers possible…
No CS5 for me now…

@Ken
Ken, have you thought about new Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture ?
Price of the new 32nm i7 2600k will be 10us$ more on the i7-950 you wrote. Benefits from the completely new 32nm arch are big in my opinion.
If you already planning to make such an investment in your PC you might want to check this item
All the best, Ilija.
well I just spent a huge amount, $1200, buying my new pc system components; I’ll let you know how fast render speeds are different using it vs the one I’m using now; I’ll do a render test with one of the projects I’ve bought here, on the old vs new pcs.
I know that as I do more with C4d it takes forever to render high-quality animations on this pc, and that’s a bottleneck, plus regular video production work in AE/Vegas…. should be a good time saver to get a much faster pc, haven’t bought a new one in 3+ years now.
