Surely we can all agree that some form of cross market promotion is a good idea?
I’m hoping that this is just the start, a test, and that they will use the data collected to decide a well thought out and permanent solution.
I don’t have a WP theme or WP plugin on here, so it currently doesn’t benefit me directly but I still think it’s a step in the right direction.

Maybe because they are planning to add another link to the menu of ThemeForest.
