Don’t take this as Envato bashing as it really isn’t. Consider it more as putting the cat amongst the pigeons, or farting in a crowded lift, or… Oh you get the idea.

I know I’m no expert on here, I’ve only been a selling member for a week, but I was just wondering if more could be done to help promote noobs like me.

Case in point: How my web stats related to the position of my item on the Code Canyon home page.

Just for reference, my item is the MyMatch Dating Software which is a full dating website system.

Before my item was listed on CC my stats were on average just 20 or so visitors per day. Day 1 on Envato visitors jumped to 217 Day 2 visitors was 349 Day 3 visitors was 322

So for the first 3 days my item was on the top line of the New Items grid. Nice visitor stats.

Then as it gradually drops down the grid, the stats start to drop off? Day 4 visitors was 194 Day 5 visitors was 135 Day 6 visitors was 132 And day 7 (not complete) looks like it will be around the 100 mark

And by Day 7 my item has dropped of the home page.

Now don’t get me wrong I’m very happy with the traffic that’s been through my site and it’s bought me a few sales, but what now.

I guess I’m concerned also because my item doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere so I’m wondering how people are going to find it now it’s not on the home page. At the moment it’s in the PHP Scripts in Miscellaneous, and yes whilst it Is a PHP script it’s also so much more than that. It’s a complete system, with design templates, payment module, social interaction. I guess it’s hard sometimes putting things into a box.

Maybe I’m just being a noob and more experienced sellers will tell me not to worry, but when you’ve put so much into a project, you want to see it being used by as many people as possible.

It seems to be that if you’re a well known seller, you items sell themselves but for newbies this can be disheartening when every sale is a struggle. And I wonder how many promising sellers have given up because of this.

I know I need to stick at it, and I will. I’m not going anywhere. I’m working on the next update to the software and looking at add-on modules that we can release, and gathering ideas for my next separate project. I just wondered if it was a common feeling when you are starting out?

Sorry to rant, over. Andy

Sure it can seem a bit bleak when you first start. But if you’re making great and unique items they will be noticed. The main ways authors drum up extra exposure is promoting their work on other sites like their own portfolios and blogs and so on. (That also involves getting referrals which is another way of earning on Envato). Also uploading something new regularly is a good way to keep exposure up. You may find your item will be made a featured item of the week on the home page as well if you’re lucky :)

Yeah, I was going to mention something in the original post about the fact that I feel even more sorry for the ThemeForest authors in terms of new items. I don’t know what the figures are but boy there seems to be a whole new home page grid everyday.

Personally, i think associative cross market products in search results should be polled within these results. So cc search for xyz should dispay other products from other markets.

Also, members that bought this also bought xyz… Etc.

We used to have same type of discussions on activeden.

Not sure what do you expect, this is a big world, and lots of new authors are joining the marketplace as time goes by.

Still, this doesnt change anything does it?

Files on the frontpage or not, the sales are still going, and if your files are really great, they will be in the popular files section.

At least, these are mine experiences since I have been an author on Envato.

My items are on average on the front page for 1-2 hours maybe more if I am lucky. Here are a few things to keep traffic consistent, and promote your work.

Twitter: tweet your product 1-2 times a day to share with followers.

Facebook: post a screenshot or something, this can generate some buzz.

I do not know any sites to promote php, but it does help to promote it.

When I started my items sold 1-3 times in the first week. Now I get more sales because of followers, promotion, etc.

Start off slow, and just do your best to promote it. Really there is not many other ways to help it. Also try to comment on other people’s items, in the forums, etc. It may get your followers who are mainly authors, but you never know ;)

I would not worry too much about it though, your item seems to be doing ok, and is quite niche, so it could sell well over time! Best of luck!

Totally agree that there should be more cross market promotion. Without trying to sound too jealous IMO ThemeForest does seem to get the bulk of the money from what I can see.

Top new authors for CC for May is 86 sales for a $4 item

Top new authors for TF for May is 571 sales for a $50 item

I think better crossover promotions would benefit smaller sellers which would ultimately benefit Envato. For instance all those WP plugins on CC that people who have just bought a WP theme could use but maybe don’t even know they exists.
