blatantly fake to stir some hype, they wouldn’t be that stupid to lose it let alone be allowed out the Apple HQ and to a bar with the damn thing…

I’m not too sure about this. I don’t think the iPhone prototype would be a loud to leave the office! It would be under strict security, something like that.

If this is a marketing ploy by apple it’s pretty smart, albeit miscreant (I think that’s the word I was looking for)... but hey, it’s business and everyone knows companies nowadays are cut-throats and’ll do anything to sell their products :?

The one thing that I question is that they introduced the MobileMe feature that allows you to track your lost phone down with GPS . If someone at Apple “accidentally lost” the phone, they would have tracked it down around the same time that they deactivated it using the same service. And they would have gotten to it WAY earlier than the time it probably took for whoever found it to contact Gizmodo and send it over to them.

Whether it was lost, or planted, I do believe that it looks legit and I’m due for an upgrade in July, so I’m really looking forward to this new version!

From the article:

The operating system According to the person who found it, this iPhone was running iPhone OS 4 .0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement. The person was able to play with it and see the iPhone 4.0 features. Then, Apple remotely killed the phone before we got access to it. We were unable to restore because each firmware is device specific—3GS firmware only loads on 3GS devices—and the there are no firmwares available for this unreleased phone. Which is another clue to its authenticity.

Testimonials are worth 0 though.

Found two thories here:

A theory I just read says that maybe Gizmodo just paid to recieve the phone and generate advertising for themselves. Another theory states that the Phone was stolen…. not lost.

And Cnet does not believe the whole thing as states some theories of their own:

hmmm…interesting theories on how they got the prototype. As to whether the whole thing’s real or not.

I mean it’s not illegal to buy things and advertise them like that, albeit it’s sneaky, but still smart. People are just butthurt I think because they didn’t get the scoop.

Looks cool though, I actually prefer it over the design they have right now.
