I agree with the second part of your post oxylusdeaign, it’s probably the most friendly way of doing it.

but, when a client is not satisfied with your work, then why would he go elsewhere with the source files? I’d think they would want some changes, which they can get with you, or want a totally different thing, so..

I think giving the source files changes the license, and thus you can charge them, because where would they go elsewhere than to another agency/company/freelancer with your files?

I’d charge some extra for it actually, and let them explicitly ask for it.

Suppose your client needs an update on the brochure, he needs someone to edit the file, as long as you are the only one with the files, the client needs to come back; in other words: New Design Job! Again in other words: Money!

So really charge them some extra.
